puppy love

NYTimes

The stereotype of the 16-year-old boy is that he has sex on the brain. But a fascinating new report suggests that boys are motivated more by love and a desire to form real relationships with the girls they date.

The report, published in this month’s Journal of Adolescence, paints a far different picture of teen boys than the stereotype of testosterone-fueled youth. Psychology researchers from the State University of New York at Oswego surveyed 105 10th-grade boys whose average age was about 16. The boys, most of whom said they were heterosexual, were given surveys asking them to select various reasons why they asked girls out, dated and pursued physical relationships. Most of the boys had dating experience, and about 40 percent were sexually active.

The boys were asked their reasons for dating and were allowed to mark more than one answer. Notably, being physically attracted to someone wasn’t the primary motivation they gave for dating. More than 80 percent of the boys noted “I really liked the person.'’ Physical attraction and wanting to get to know someone better were the second most popular answers.

a quick&superficial sean lennon bio

i remember going to pick up Sean Lennon's first solo album "Into the Sun".

he didn't release another album for eight years and had seemed to remain out of the spotlight. a few months ago his name came up in conversation and someone told me about his Page Six stint. in 2005 Sean Lennon published the following ad for love in the New York Post:

Any girl who is interested must simply be born female and between the ages of 18 and 45. They must have an IQ above 130 and they must be honest. They must not have any clinical, psychological disorders... and a kind heart. Clearly beautiful - but beauty on the inside is more important - but no deformities, third legs, fifth nipples...I'm completely alone and I'm completely miserable. So please send your request to Page Six.
i got curious about him and researched the (evidently) controversial musician/producer/actor...

apparently, between albums, he discovered that his best childhood friend, Max LeRoy, was having an affair with his longtime girlfriend Bijou Phillips. LeRoy was killed in a motorcycle accident before they had a chance to reconcile.

and so came "Friendly Fire" in 2006.

In 2006 journalist Andy Tennille wrote "Lennon channeled the anger and heartache he felt into his first album in eight years, and the result is Friendly Fire, a gorgeously depressing album with lyrics that at times seethe with rage and drown in sorrow juxtaposed against dreamy pop arrangements and Lennon's saccharine sweet falsetto. "Dead Meat" opens with a gentle waltzing piano line before he innocently sings, Dead meat/Don't you know you're dead meat?/You just messed with the wrong team/Better not try to fall asleep now. "Friendly Fire" reads like an open letter from Lennon to LeRoy — You launched the assault with the first cannonball/My soldiers were sleeping — backed by a sparse guitar riff. Some call it shoegaze pop; others say it's emo. One thing's for sure: Hell hath no fury like a Lennon scorned."

fifty minutes of revealing music videos accompanies "Friendly Fire" making it nearly impossible to ignore the strong lyrics. friends Jordana Brewster, Devon Aoki, Lindsay Lohan (they were rumored to have a fling), Asia Argento, Carrie Fisher and ex-girlfriend Bijou Phillips all appear in the films.

here's "Dead Meat"

here's "On and Off Again"

Below is the video for "L'Eclipse" a remixed version of "Parachutes" Lennon made with french artist M in 2007. it sounds more upbeat than any of the other songs.

he is touring to promote his last album. so tragic...i hope everything works out for him he seems lonely.

notable sundance documentaries

Marshall Heyman of W Magazine gushed about this year's Sundance Documentaries and lists his favorites. if you've seen any of the following please leave a comment.

“There’s just been an explosion of creativity in documentaries,” he says. “Real life turns out to be wildly fascinating. You couldn’t make this s--- up.”

Marina Zenovich's "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired"
A riveting investigation into the shady facts behind the 1977 trial of the Academy Award–winning Polish filmmaker for statutory rape.

Alex Gibney's "Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson"
A nonfiction biopic of the renegade Rolling Stone journalist, who killed himself in February 2005.

Christopher Bell's "Bigger, Stronger, Faster*"
A personal, Michael Moore–style take on America’s perception of and preoccupation with steroids.

James Marsh's "Man on Wire"
An elegiac visual poem about Philippe Petit, the Frenchman who tightrope-walked between the Twin Towers on a 250-foot-long cable in August 1974, and the team that helped him.

Nanette Burstein's "American Teen"
An at times amusing, at times agonizing year in the life of a few students at a high school in Warsaw, Indiana.

Tia Lessin and Carl Deal's "Trouble the Water"
The aftereffects of Hurricane Katrina, as seen through the eyes (and camera) of amateur filmmaker and rapper Kimberly Roberts. The backstory: Deal and Lessin, professional and personal partners for 15 years and frequent collaborators of Michael Moore’s, went to Louisiana to make sense of what they were seeing on TV in September 2005.

carbonated cucumber water

pepsi has released cucumber flavored soda in Japan. i bet it's delicious...think of the cucumber flavored water they give you at spas/salons, only carbonated. yummmmmm

they shouldn't have put PEPSI so big on the label, tho. at first i thought it was pepsi & cucumber mixed together, which would have surpassed the level of yuk-ness that vanilla coke did.

Police: Teen pimp lures girls into illegal sex

10:41 AM CDT on Tuesday, March 25, 2008. By REBECCA LOPEZ / WFAA-TV

DALLAS — She's just 13 years old, a middle-schooler who is now facing charges involving a serious crime.

Police arrested the girl at a local nightclub where she was allegedly bringing other young girls to dance and to serve as prostitutes.

Investigators said the 13-year-old lured other girls to Club Metropolis, enticing them with the promise of money and even forcing some of them to dance and sell their bodies for sex.

"It's a really horrendous affair," said Dallas police Lt. Chess Williams.

Police estimate there are hundreds of teenage prostitutes on the streets of Dallas because there is a big demand. Recently, they found a 12-year-old girl dancing naked at a nightclub.

"I can't believe that a 13-, 14-, 15-year-old child knowlingly injects herself into a world of prostitution," Lt. Williams said.

But it did happen, and the 13-year-old in this case may have talked another school friend into prostitution.

Police won't say what school the girl attended, but they're not surprised. "One of the remarkable things we learned through all of this is there's a tremendous amount of money in all this, so a huge demand for young girls in prostitution world," Lt. Williams said.

Police said the young girls aren't acting alone. They say some of the same people who are pimping out the adult prostitutes are the same ones exploiting young girls.

The 13-year-old who was arrested and others like her may be runaways whose childhoods were stolen for profit.

this is the american dream

THE END OF SUBURBIA: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of The American Dream

"We're literally stuck up a cul-de-sac in a cement SUV without a fill-up" - James Howard Kunstler

Since World War II North Americans have invested much of their newfound wealth in suburbia. It has promised a sense of space, affordability, family life and upward mobility. As the population of suburban sprawl has exploded in the past 50 years, so too has the suburban way of life become embedded in the American consciousness.

Suburbia, and all it promises, has become the American Dream.

But as we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.

The consequences of inaction in the face of this global crisis are enormous. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia ?
