Just digitized a record I have called The Face of Africa: Tribal Music of The Belgian Congo (interesting that it is "tribal music" as opposed to "folk music"). Here are my two favorite jams off it. Both are from the Luba/Songe Tribe of Katanga Province, Belgian Congo, who knows what the area is called nowadays. Links and descriptions off the album cover:
1. Mamwana Kufiki Munda - Topical song with guitars and bottle, by Ilunga Patrice and Misomba Victor with friends. Recorded at the Cite Idigene Musonoi, Kolwezi Copper Mine. The words of the song are partly in Swahili, as well as in their local Hemba dialect of Luba. The length of melodic line is notable, and the tone of voice which at first may appear somewhat harsh to western ears, is typical of their tribe where bel canto is not appreciated. (dont know what the flub this dude's talking about, i think the voices sound pretty sweet)
2. Mama Josefina - Party song with guitars and bottle, by Ilunga Patrice and Misomba Victor. Recorded at the Cite Idigene Musonoi, Kolwezi Copper Mine. Mama Josefina was also a local beauty of the Luba, whose form and features have given rise to more than one song of adulation in this region of the southern Congo.
There is no kinda date on the record, and I haven't had time to look into it, lemme know if anyone figures out when these tracks might be from.
