St-Germain Cocktail

One of the best nights my friend Alli and I had on our backpacking trip through western Europe back in the summer 2005 was spent at Le Bilboquet (aka "Le Temple du Jazz"), a tiny jazz club in St-Germain (think dark oak bar, rich red velvet upholstery, dim antique lighting). A friend of mine who recently spent time in Paris told me that the jazz club shutdown, which almost brings tears to my eyes. But anyway, here's a good cockail we sipped:

2 Shots Champagne* or Dry White Wine
1 ½ Shots St-Germain
2 Shots Sparkling Water or Club Soda
Method: Stir ingredients in a tall ice-filled Collins glass, mixing completely. Think of Paris circa 1947. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Variation: Think of Sartre circa 1947. Be the lemon twist.

* Or Sparkling Wine, Prosecco or Cava

Fête Nationale

On this day in 1789, a gaggle of French ragamuffins, "intoxicated with liberty and enthusiasm" got medieval on some pale-faced monarchs and precipitated some modern nation state shit.

To celebrate their achievement, treat yourself to that rarest of red meats, steak tartare - ideally complimented with a healthy carafe Beaujolais. Then skip down to MacDougal for a game of Pétanque with some merry Francophones.

How they did in '89:

He Comes From France

I've been to the original APC shop in Paris' 6th - it's an unassuming, 800 square foot room with rickety planked floors and a few half-full racks of gear... quite a charming little spot; I hope it's still around...

Chief EuroPrepster, Jean Touitou, sends word that APC has opened a new shop at 5 Rue de Marseille. See his note below... now that's a monsieur with priorities.

Carla's Junk

On her forthcoming album, Comme si de rien n'était (As if Nothing Happened), Carla Bruni - who once called monogamy "boring" - describes new hubby, Nic Sarko:

"You are my junk. More deadly than Afghan heroin. More dangerous than Colombian white..."

My my my, beauty & brains -- Carla, you are exquisite.

Which way to Tatooine?

Cedric Delsaux has created a series of photos featuring Star Wars characters in contemporary urban environments. The star guys are actually toys that have been superimposed onto photos of Paris' grittier barrios. I'm more than a bit disappointed there are no pics of Ewoks (holding hands, crossing street) or Chewie (fine dining, he'll have the duck a l'orange) , but still, much dap, Ced. Be sure to check out his other stuff as well - the landscapes were pretty stunning.

PS what a fabulous work environment over there at Tak! HQ--

It is Cannes or Cannes?

Comin to ya from the French Riviera, egghead auteur Stevie Sodes drops the most anticipated flick of the festival, Che. Benicio Del Toro plays El Che, and according to early reviews, he has hit another homer... naturally.

Jeffrey Wells, live bloggin from the premiere:

I know I predicted this based on a reading of Peter Buchman's script, but the first half of Steven Soderbergh's 268-minute Che Guevara epic is, for me, incandescent -- a piece of full-on, you-are-there realism about the making of the Cuban revolution that I found utterly believable. Not just "take it to the bank" gripping, but levitational -- for someone like myself it's a kind of perfect dream movie. It's also politically vibrant and searing -- tells the "Che truth," doesn't mince words, doesn't give you any "movie moments" (and God bless it for that).

It's what I'd hoped for all along and more. The tale is the tale, and it's told straight and true. Benicio del Toro's Guevara portrayal is, as expected, a flat-immersion that can't be called a "performance" as much as...I don't know, some kind of knock-down, ass-kick reviving of the dead. Being, not "acting." I loved the lack of sentimentality in this thing, the electric sense that Soderbergh is providing a real semblance of what these two experiences -- the successful Cuban revolution of '57 and '58, and the failed attempt to do the same in Boliva in '67 -- were actually like.

Oh, God...the second half is starting right now. The aspect ratio on the second film is 1.85 to 1, but the first film was in Scope 2.35 to 1."

In the Year 2000

The National Library of France (BnF) has posted a series of prints from 1910 depicting life in the year 2000... and how prophetic! They were credited to somebody named Villemard.

Man I wish the year 2000 was more like this--

Car Shoes

One For the Road

The Barber

The Avenue of the Opera

got lacostes on but they look like sneakers

Celebrating 75 years in the business, Lacoste comes correct with some lean sneakers for the summertime. I'm a stickler for aerodynamics in sneaks, and these bear that low-pro, APC-style French touch... naturally.

A select six will be released, limited edition, 75 bills. Dibs on the green guys.

Funghi

"These are four scanned pictures of hardcopies I possess of the French nuclear test codenamed Licorne, which was fired on July 3rd, 1970 . The French army had those pictures taken on site.

Those pictures were readily available at the time at (the) Tahiti and Moruroa military bases, and mine have been quite degraded. I scanned them and tried to restore them." (via Flickr)

Do the P.A.N.T.S.

Justice collabo with Surface to Air Paris (thanks Bird for the tip). Surface to Air is one of my favorite labels. They make some ill clothes, bags, etc, but their operations span across the world of design. Apple did a piece on them and their use of Mac hardware and software to take care of bidness.

They have offices in New York, Paris, and Stockholm.

The Joos-teez collection will be available at select locations worldwide including Surface To Air Paris, Surface To Air Brazil, Colette, Barneys, & Le Bon Marché.

A Song for the Spring

I can think of nothing more perfect than this video. The song, the girl, the gear, the footwork... slays me. France Gall is the new Uffie.

I've been waking up to this song every day this week and my life is waaaaaaaaay better for it.

You should give it a try.
