design group antrepo takes a handful of product packages and strips them down to their core branding elements. looking at these, it's hard not to get sucked into a 'less is more' cliche...but, for most of them, it's pretty spot on.

the two great american cans

Like the Campbell's Soup can, there's something great and American about holding a can of Budweiser. Budweiser's long tradition of clever marketing (the Budweiser girls have been around since 1883) has launched their can design into the status of an icon, much like the Campbell soup can. Here's a little background on the king of cans.

The iconic Campbell's Soup can dates back to 1898 when CEO Herberton Williams demanded the company adopt the color scheme of his alma mater, Cornell University. Since it's debut at the 1900 Paris Exhibition, the can's design has hardly changed. It has since flourished into an imperishable symbol of American suburbia.

More than half a century later, Andy Warhol created a series of Campbell's Soup prints in homage to the lunch he consumed every day for twenty years. For years, Warhol turned down commissions from Campbell's arguing that "the whole point would be lost with any kind of commercial tie-in." Eventually, however, the self-proclaimed fame whore gave in accepting a hefty sum of money in exchange for additional silkscreens.

Thomas Robertson of Ripple designs and Eli Bonerz of XLarge streetwear bring us these playful 8-wick 7x3 inch soy non-scented LEGO-shaped candles. $48 each A+R Store (a little steep, i might add). wouldn't these look great in this kid's bedroom?? :

succulent moss

designer Nguyen La Chanh created this bathroom mat that nurses three different species of moss. the humidity of your bathroom should provide the moss with enough water to live, so no watering is required. i can't tell you how happy this rug would make me every morning-there's nothing like walking barefoot over verdant greens , especially dewy moss.

i just discovered this wonderful blog called "cuban poster art" featuring a slew of vintage Cuban silkscreen film posters. the blog also includes clips from some of the films. shop for the posters at CubanPosters.net. will be keeping this site in mind for the next time i find myself in front of a dauntingly blank wall.
