Rolling Stone just published a piece on the White House record collection . . apparently, while Nixon was president, the RIAA decided that the White House library should include recordings in addition to books. the RIAA proceeded to donate 2000 LPs to the White House, most of which were theh albums of Pat Boone, the Carpenters and John Denver. thankfully, the collection was updated to accomodate the musical tastes of (as Rolling Stone put it) the "hipper Carter adminstration" by adding albums such as Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, the Ramones' Rocket to Russia, the Sex Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, the Flying Burrito Brothers' The Gilded Palace of Sin and records by Santana, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Isaac Hayes, Elton John, the Cars and Barry Manilow. Reagan's moved the collection to the basement to get dusty when he took office in 1983, and now people are counting on Obama to bring it back. Rolling Stone notes that "A spokesman for Obama said it was too early to comment on whether the president would revive the library. But Obama may be pleased to learn that at least a few of his favorite albums — Bob Dylan's Blood on the Tracks, Bruce Springsteen's Born to Run — are there if he wants them on pristine slabs of vinyl." via Rolling Stone.

barack obama- the college years
Time magazine published a series of photographs taken of Barack Obama in 1980. the photographs were shot by an aspiring photographer and acquaintance of Obama named Lisa Jack. in 1980 Jack, now a psychologist, was studying with Obama at Occidental College in LA when she asked him to pose for her. Jack recently found the 29-year-old negatives in her basement not having remembered taking so many photos. Jack courteously locked the negatives in a safe until after the election so the photos wouldn't be used for political purposes (some polls reported that Obama's smoking habit would negatively affect votes more than the color of his skin). Obama still smokes cigarettes, but will be pressured to quit on January 20th in compliance with the smoking ban at the white house. Obama responded to questions about the white house smoking ban explaining, “What I would say is that I have done a terrific job under the circumstances of making myself much healthier, and I think that you will not see any violations of these rules."

BaRock the House
If you're in LA and looking to have a Barack'n good time, be sure to check out BaRock the House, a benefit concert to raise money, encourage votes, and get people excited for Barack Obama. The event will feature five up-and-coming politically active bands: 80s synth-funk throwback Wallpaper; The Outline thoughtful electronic-alternative collective Oliver Future; startup indie-pop group White Arrow; and singer-songwriter Jeff Jastrow.
The concert was organized entirely by an '08 USC graduate and an '09 Trinity College student (and new friend to me....because a friend of a Lizzard is a friend indeed). Brav-obama, boys!
