Dubbed by one music critic as "the most indie thing to have ever existed," the C86 mixtape was a freebie compilation distributed by the British music magazine NME in 1986. The tape, whose name is a play on the standard labeling of blank cassettes (e.g. C80, C90, etc.) and the year 1986, broke so-called "indie" music to the mainstream, and spawned an entire subgenre of its own. Based upon jangly guitars, deadpan vocals, and infectious pop hooks, the music represented on C86 defined the British indie scene of the late 80's and has inspired legions of followers.
