the wrestler

last night i saw Darren Aronofsky's latest flick, "The Wrestler". the film is shot in documentary style and both emotionally and visually intense (a staple gun makes its way into one of the wrestling matches, for example). it struck me as a modernized & graphically explicit variation of the "Raging Bull" story. Evan Rachel Wood acted well-she's super good at crying & freaking out at people (think "Thirteen", "the Upside of Anger", etc). Marisa Tomei plays an aging stripper named Candy and looks beautiful. but the standou performance is definitely Mickey Rourke. he was EXCEPTIONAL. while i don't want to see this movie ever again because it's too sad (i feel the same way about "Requiem for a Dream"), it's brilliant and i give it two baa-aaa's up.
