the opening scene of "charade"

the opening shot of "charade"(1963) is one of the most beautiful sequence shots i've ever seen. it's not hard for a shot of audrey hepburn in the swiss alps to be "nice", but there is something particularly bewitching about this sequence.

the colors of the umbrellas, audrey's ensemble, the music, and the rich and fluid movement of the camera all make it an opening sequence that is hard to forget. just when you begin to take it all in and take yourself too seriously there goes the watergun.

off we go from there watching on as a distraught and instantly lovable audrey hepburn walks through the indoor pool of the chalet onto a veranda. enter cary grant.

director stanley donen couldn't have made this scene any more perfect.
