okie weiss and the murder ballads

keep your eyes peeled for Okie Weiss and the Murder Ballads. a bluegrass band from Montreal led by Pete Weiss '05. i saw their newly relocated to NYC trio "The A-OK's" play a sold high-energy show at the national underground on april 12th that anyone would have enjoyed.

they're latest album "Sciota, Peru" got 4 stars by the Montreal Hour. i really like "Boubacar's Big Date" and the rendition of "Viditay and I" i heard them play was rockin, tooooo.

steve lalla: While Joe Grass and The Murder Ballads are known for their Sunday night bluegrass weekly at local hole Cock'n'Bull, Okie Weiss is a well-travelled American songwriter, vocalist and guitarist who provides the Ballads with 10 original songs and introduces vocalist Dara Weiss and formidable mandolin and fiddle players to the equation. The result is a truly sublime marriage of bluegrass and country music's best melodies, elements of rock, soul and jazz, and masterful, emotive lyrics, bearing comparison to such giants as Neil Young, The Band or Gram Parsons.

from the band:
After a crackdown by border agents, Axford and Okie of THE MURDER BALLADS were forced to flee their adopted home of Montreal, QC for the relatively warmer climes of Brooklyn, NY. There they teamed up with Grasmeyer to form the bluegrass/cajun powerhaus THE A-OKs. If we’re not at home snuggling, you can probably find us laying down the twang at The National Underground with various special guests from both sides of the borderline. Big up to ya from The A-OKs.

upcoming shows:
APRIL 26 8PM The National Underground New York, NY
APRIL 29 9PM The National Underground New York, NY
May 1 9PM Hill Country BBQ New York, NY
