Neon Indian on Late Night
This past week ML favorite Neon Indian made their TV debut on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Pretty awesome performance in my opinion. As much as I like the lo-fi aesthetic from the LP, I think Palomo and co. pack a meaner punch with their live stuff.

Masekela'n
Merkin Muff and I were watching Shaun White crush it at the X-games a few nights ago when he pointed out to me that Sal Masekela, the host of the event, is the son of the famous jazz musician Hugh Masekela. Hugh grew up in South Africa and for awhile his songs protested apartheid and slavery. Meanwhile Sal keeps us up to speed on the day's top entertainment stories and gets us stoked about gnarly mctwists and double corks -- what a dynamic family!

Two-wheelin'
Ridiculous street biking from youngster Danny MacAskill. If you don't have time for the whole thing skip ahead to the 3 minute mark, where he does a back flip off of a tree. Even more impressive is that it looks like he's riding a 13 year old girl's Schwinn.
The video has a nice emo soundtrack as well.
I wonder if he can ride no-hands.

Prom Night
Stickin with electro tuesday - I really enjoy it when artists overlay their prog-disco tracks on vintage 70's videos. Here's a new jam from Linus Loves. How quickly can you name the movie?
Prom Night by Linus Loves from Cornelius Tatum on Vimeo.
And another from an ML favorite, Breakbot. Not sure where this video is from, but Kurt Russell's playing a mean bass and looking great in the sweater vest.

Prognosis Positive
Chalk this up under best news I've heard in oh 9: the stars of Seinfeld (sans Newman) are going to be appearing together in the next season of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Last season's finale was incredible, so I'm expecting more of the same this fall. I'm also hoping Larry stays with Vivica A. and doesn't get back with Cheryl, that car-wash c*nt.
It's friday, and I'm just about as happy as George is in this scene

trin squash
This past weekend the Trinity College squash team won its 11th straight national championship, keeping alive its NCAA record-breaking streak of 202 straight victories. The Bantams prevailed in dramatic fashion over the #2 ranked Princeton Tigers. The deciding match was between the top 2 players in the nation: Princeton's Mauricio Sanchez from Mexico and Trinity's Indian behemoth, Baset Chaudry. Sanchez had a commanding 5-0 lead in the 5th and final game of the match - 4 points from the national championship for his team. He went on to choke in typical Princeton fashion, dropping the game, match and season for the Tiglets.
Trinity's impressive streak proves also to be a huge triumph for the sport of squash. The team's accomplishments have landed it a number of bits on ESPN, notably the recent Outside the Lines segment that aired last week (can be seen here). Two years ago the team's coach, Paul Assaiante, was given the opportunity to throw the first pitch at a Red Sox game. As you might imagine, the crowd was mainly comprised of massholes shouting "what the f*ck is squash?!" That being said, I'm always thrilled to see my favorite sport be brought to national attention and given the accolades it deserves; after all, most Americans identify squash with lock-jawed New Englanders or the sport's retarded stepchild, racketball.
With all of the praise Trinity Squash receives and exposure it gives the sport, I just want to point out that they are not exactly competing on a level playing field. It is no secret that the Trinity coach, Paul Assiante, is given carte blanche by the school's administration to poach the world's top young players, regardless of their academic backgrounds or ability to pay tuition. It is a fact that the best squash is played outside of the U.S. Over the past 11 years, there have rarely been more than 1 or 2 Americans in the team's lineup. By contrast, the nation's other top programs must abide by far stricter admissions standards and have significantly more Americans filling their lineups. Trinity has undoubtedly raised the bar in college squash, but it has essentially transformed the recruiting process to an arms race for highly-trained foreign players.
Well if you've made it this far and want to see some squash in action, here are some dank highlights from the Tournament of Champions, one of the world's biggest squash tournies that takes place in Grand Central every February.

JCVD
"Stallone gave me a part in his next movie. But I ask him about the subject, about the story. He said, 'You're gonna make lots of money.' I don't want to hear that, I want to hear what was my character. He was unable to tell what it's going to be. Stallone said: 'You know, uh, well, the fighting will be good.' [So I said:] 'Sly, what is my character?' So I didn't do the movie."
—Jean-Claude Van Damme describing why he turned down a leading role in Sylvester Stallone's upcoming film, The Expendables, for artistic reasons. It's nice to see he's maintained his artistic integrity through his 5 marriages, serious coke problem, and brief stint with homelessness. He clearly hasn't forgotten about the Oscar-worthy roles that defined him in the late 80s: Frank Dux (Bloodsport), Lyon Gaultier (Lionheart) and Kurt Sloane (Kickboxer), to name a few. Ironically, Dolph Lundgren, who played JC's nemesis in Universal Soldier, ultimately accepted the part in Sly's upcoming film.

Deep Thoughts
Here are 10 of my favorite Deep Thoughts, by my man Jack Handey.
"One day one of my little nephews came up to me and asked me if the equator was a real line that went around the Earth, or just an imaginary one. I had to laugh. Laugh and laugh. Because I didn't know, and I thought that maybe by laughing he would forget what he asked me."
"Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what IS that thing?!"
"To me, clowns aren't funny. In fact, they're kinda scary. I've wondered where this started, and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus and a clown killed my dad."
"It's easy to sit there and say you'd like to have more money. And I guess that's what I like about it. It's easy. Just sitting there, rocking back and forth, wanting that money."
"If someone told me it wasn't 'fashionable' to talk about freedom, I think I'd just have to look him square in the eye and say, 'Okay, YOU TELL ME what's `fashionable'.' But he won't. And you know why? Because you can't ask someone what's fashionable in a smart-alecky way like that. You have to be friendly and say, 'By the way, what's fashionable?'"
"If you ever fall off the Sears Tower, just go real limp, because maybe you'll look like a dummy and people will try to catch you because, hey, free dummy."
"Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis."
"When this girl at the museum asked me who I liked better, Monet or Manet, I said, 'I like mayonnaise.' She just stared at me, so I said it again, louder. Then she left. I guess she went to try to find some mayonnaise for me."
"If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked dolphins the most? I'd say Flippy, wouldn't you? You'd be wrong though. It's Hambone."
"He was a cowboy, mister, and he loved the land. He loved it so much he made a woman out of dirt and married her. But when he kissed her, she disintegrated. Later, at the funeral, when the preacher said, 'Dust to dust,' some people laughed, and the cowboy shot them. At his hanging, he told the others, 'I'll be waiting for you in heaven---with a gun.'"

2008 space photos
Nat Geo just released their most viewed photos of outer space taken in 2008. Here are my 3 favorite of the bunch:
3) Phobos landscape
The Mars orbiting HiRISE camera snapped this shot of the Stickney Crater on Phobos, a moon named after the Greek god of horror.
2) Gamma ray burst
Scientists discovered in March the first gamma ray burst that was visible to the naked eye. It occurred 7.5 billion light years from earth and shattered the previous record for the most distant object visible without magnification.
1) Smile
This shot was taken in Manila, Phillipines - hands down the best pic of the group. On Decemeber 1, Asians were able to see Venus, Jupiter and the moon align to form a smiling face. Unfortunately this appeared to the United States as a frowning face, hopefully not a sign of things to come for the respective regions.

LHC

Huge day in the science world today - the earth's largest particle collider passed its first obstacle by successfully firing two beams of protons in opposite directions around the extraordinary 17-mile track at the CERN headquarters in Geneva. The particle physicists (led by the smartest dude in the world, Stephen Hawking) behind the project are aiming to isolate a subatomic quirk called the Higgs Boson (also known as the God particle) by shooting and crashing two protons at each other with the enormous Large Hadron Collider. To put it simply, by recreating the Big Bang, the scientists behind the LHC could potentially explain the universe and its origins. For those of you who don't know CERN, you clearly haven't read Angels & Demons --- member scientists have invented the internet and x-rays.
This vid gives a great description of CERN if you want to learn more
Props to Google for recognizing the achievement today
The endeavor didn't come without its critics, however. A minority of physicists strongly believes that the collision will create a black hole that will engulf our planet! The fear of this even drove a 16 year-old Indian girl to suicide earlier today. Hawking says there is no chance, and he discovered black holes so I'm gonna take his word for it. Here's a pretty cool youtube depiction of the "potential disaster"
