it's a shame that most movies no longer feature a title sequence - while i'll admit that most of the time they're pretty dull, when a title sequence is well thought out there's nothing better to set you in the mood for the movie you're about to watch.
hitchcock was a master of the witty and purposeful title sequence - take a look at a handful of his best below. i particularly like the one for rear window - hitchcock really establishes the meta-cinematic, "movie about watching movies" theme right from the get go!...as a side note, after watching the north by northwest one (below), i'm just about positive that mad men creator matt weiner must've had it in mind when dreaming up that recurring shot of the side of the sterling cooper building.

mr. hitchcock would like to say a few words to you
a collection of gems. for anyone unfamiliar with alfred hitchcock--the ceaseless self-promoter, these original trailers will serve as testament to his towering persona. quite a few memorable quotes buried in these...pretty sure hitchcock is one of the only people to have ever referred to new york as a place where "cary grant can go places and do things," and to have dubbed a movie a "sex-mystery." for anyone who's seen Marnie the scene descriptions are priceless.

Hitchcock Style

The first book on Hitchcock, which is not a film book, but a book about style, decoration and fashion! The motel in Psycho. The bachelor pad in Rear Window. The blonde elegance of Tippi Hedren and Grace Kelly. “Hitchcock style” is immediately identifiable and universally recognized. That’s because Alfred Hitchcock’s images, which have informed fashion, photography, and art as well as film, arise as much from a particularly vivid aesthetic as from the cockspenseful subject matter.
Jean-Pierre Dufreigne has traversed the world of Hitchcock to recapture and examine the director’s unique atmospheric sensibilities. We hear from many of the talents that once formed Hitchcock’s circle—actors, set and costume designers, cameramen and composers, and title creators. This stylistic study ends with a catalogue raisonné of Sir Alfred’s entire œuvre.
