pierrot le fou is flat

the party scene in jean-luc godard's pop art film "pierrot le fou" is fascinatingly boring and full of phonies*. the monochromatic color scheme and dialogue speak directly to the self-aware materialism of the pop art movement. these stills are all too reminiscent of lichtenstein's work, but it was very interesting to see how godard flattened out this film.

*as holden caulfield might say

godard was trying to express the materialistic quality of the society/circle of people that ferdinand (protagonist)is among. they have no depth--which is intensified by the flat walls they are set against as well as the conversation they are engaged in (all on popular products). ferdinand desires a life that is different, more exciting and filled with life...and that is what leads him to runaway!
