RAD

http://albes.blogs.com/albes_bmx_mail_order/images/2008/09/04/cru.jpg
juuuuust got netflix and made plans to watch RAD (1986)* over mac n' cheese w/ my dearest childhood friend jarad (it won't be the same without my big bro frank) but, to my disappointment, netflix doesn't have the title*. for those of you who haven't had the pleasure of experiencing this pre-x-games BMX gem, here are some highlights to spark your interests and rally your support for RAD. left, our leading player, hottie newspaper boy cum pro BMXer cru jones (played by bill allen). his sweetheart, christian, is played by a fresh faced lori loughlin. and below, the world's most memorable BMX number (think gymnastics floor only with pegs and a soundtrack provided by australian new wave band real life in the background...so badass).

*i was the 23,429th person to sign a petition to get the movie released on DVD.

Too cool. I never saw this movie but I love the chicks big 80's hair. I'm a BMXer from so far back, it wasn't even called BMX.

I hate to say it, but if I were in a position to put this movie out on DVD, I don't think I would, either. First: I'd venture that almost everyone who signed that position wants to see the movie as a pure exercise in ironic "so-bad-it's-good" derision, and that most of THOSE people are young enough that, if it got released, they would just download it from file-sharing sites or rent it from Netflix and have bad movie parties. Netflix would probably only buy about fifty copies of the DVD, maximum, and of the 25,000 or so people who sign the petition, I would guess that five-hundred people actually buy the DVD. Of those five-hundred copies, I'd venture to guess that 450 are gag-gifts and dorm room staples (until two years from now when the '80s aren't cool anymore and grunge comes back), and the remaining fifty are bought by the cast and crew of the movie itself. If an initial pressing of 25,000 discs is made, I'll bet 19,500 end up in a warehouse somewhere.

That said, if you do get it released, and you manage to rent it, I'll totally bring the popcorn.

My husband LOVES this movie and so I spent more time then I care to mention to try to find a DVD copy of it for him for Christmas one year. I successfully found one. I think they just have a VHS to DVD burner and are selling the burned copies but it worked and my husband is now the envy of all his friends because he has a copy. Here's a site that sells it: http://www.rad-on-dvd.com/ This isn't where I bought it but it's at least a start.
