2008 space photos

Nat Geo just released their most viewed photos of outer space taken in 2008. Here are my 3 favorite of the bunch:

3) Phobos landscape

The Mars orbiting HiRISE camera snapped this shot of the Stickney Crater on Phobos, a moon named after the Greek god of horror.

2) Gamma ray burst

Scientists discovered in March the first gamma ray burst that was visible to the naked eye. It occurred 7.5 billion light years from earth and shattered the previous record for the most distant object visible without magnification.

1) Smile

This shot was taken in Manila, Phillipines - hands down the best pic of the group. On Decemeber 1, Asians were able to see Venus, Jupiter and the moon align to form a smiling face. Unfortunately this appeared to the United States as a frowning face, hopefully not a sign of things to come for the respective regions.
