The bromate count is so high in the Ivanhoe Reservior on which Los Angeles depends that exposure to sunlight renders it useless. Thus, 400,000 big, bouncy black balls were released to shield the sunlight. This makes it the first time 400,000 big, black balls in L.A. didn’t involve smut. (via BuzzFeed)
