A lamprey (sometimes also called lamprey eel) is a jawless fish with a toothed, funnel-like sucking mouth.

I just found your lovely blog and am catching up on it BUT, just have to say, I spent many a summer night wading in the Deerfield River only to have these suckers swirl around the ankles of my friends and I. Repulsive!
