le ballon rouge, a 1956 short by albert lamorisse, follows the magnificent friendship between a parisian boy and a mute red balloon with a life of its own. the film, which features almost no dialogue, won lamorisse an oscar for best original screen play and the palme d'or for short films at cannes. lamorisse later published a children's book by the same title featuring photo stills from of his mesmerizing cinematic creation. the score (well deserving of a good remix) was done by maurice leroux and, interestingly enough, the adorable little boy in the film is lamorisse's son, pascal. you can watch the 34-minute film in it's entirety online at google video and here are some photo stills that sum of the film nicely:
