artist miriam simun is developing a system for sourcing, creating, and distributing human cheese. simun neither condemns nor supports her redesign of the cheese industry (which, by the way, isn't particularly healthy) but, rather, views her work as a vehicle for discussion about what is "natural". her "sweet airy equity" cheese is made from the milk of a slightly overweight mother in Midtown whose diet is rich in sweets. when you think about it like this, how ethical is eating cheese, anyway? would you consume the milk of a festively plump lady from midtown?

By serving human cheese, I ask people to make a decision: to eat, or not to eat. Facing the decision to ingest materializes the technological and ethical issues at hand, going beyond our rational senses to appeal to our visceral and instinctual humanness.
In doing so, I hope to engage discourse about what we eat, who we are (evolving to be), and what kind of future we want. In serving human cheese, I pose a number of questions:
As we navigate the complex landscape of technologically modified food production, how do we understand what is natural, healthy, ethical? If we reject all technologically modified food in favor of what is ‘natural,’ how far back to do we go? If we are to welcome new technologies into our lives, how will we continue to redefine what is natural, normal and healthy? How will this change our relationship to each other, the natural world and ourselves? If we are determined to continue to enjoy our cheese, perhaps it is most natural, ethical and healthy to eat human cheese? And if not, what other biotechnological processes does this force us to reconsider?

an excerpt out of one of scientology's most privileged documents:

see yuck
i haven't been to a good show in a while, and i'm pumped to catch yuck next week...get yer tix. for a band who have yet to release an album (that's due feb. 15), they've got a decent amount of material floating around on the web (no doubt because of the yuck blog, on which you can also check out their peculiar drawings).
the music press has been throwing around a lot of early-90's indie rock names (pavement, superchunk, lemonheads, etc.), and, as dangerous as it is for a young band to draw such comparisons, they're definitely all there in the mix.
this is their first single, "georgia."

in 1971 the Quaker oats company paid Roald Dahl to create a film adaptation of his book "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". unhappy with Dahl's literal film translation of the book, Quaker quietly commissioned David Seltzer to edit Dahl's script. the result was a film offering a marked departure from Dahl's book, chiefly in its portrayal of Willy Wonka. in the book, Wonka is made out to be dark and aloof whereas, in the film, Wonka's dialogue is seasoned with lyrical literary references by the likes of o-Wilde and Willy Shakes, to name a few.

pythagorean tree
when i asked my friend charley, the engineer, to comment on the dropper's* "Pythagorean Tree" piece below he recalled how the disco ball's pattern reflects the infinite systems of our universe: "how long is the coastline of tahiti? it has a definite length, but if you break it down into smaller and smaller curves the coastline goes on forever."
*in the early 1960s, an artistic movement called "drop art" emerged after artists clark richert and gene bernofsky dropped painted rocks onto the street from their dorm window. richert and bernofsky were intrigued by the "happenings" their art spawned. as their artistic ideologies propagated, the "droppers" purchased six acres of artistic space/pasture in southwest colorado. inspired by the work of buckminster fuller, the droppers erected geodesic domes throughout the artistic commune (pictured above). the domes, mostly constructed from metal scraps, served as centers for the droppers to live, work, sleep and (plausibly) drop acid inside.

patti smith's "just kids"
i finally read patti smith's memoir titled "just kids" that recounts her romantic symbiotic relationship with the late photographer robert mapplethorpe. smith sprinkles her memoir with anecdotes about mapplethorpe, peggy guggenheim, and warhol's factory go-ers. her tone is clever and honest providing an unjaded view of that "glamorous" new york scene. i highly recommend the book, particularly if you're interested in the factory/hotel chelsea scene. plus, it's a quick read.
